When to book a stay in Tallinn for less

Tallinn is cheapest in early spring. March is usually the best value, with January cheap too. June is the priciest, at the start of the June to August peak, when the days are longest and the city is full of visitors and events like Tallinn Music Week and Old Town Days. The arrival day matters too: Monday tends to be the cheapest, Friday the most expensive, with a gap of about a fifth between them. The best rates disappear close to the date, so for a fixed trip book a few weeks ahead, and earlier in summer and during the festivals.

The most booked district is the City-Centre, the strict heart with the opera, the bus station and the Old Town within a walk, a guest favourite and still affordable. Right next to it is the Old Town with the highest location rating, the most atmospheric but also the priciest in summer. Põhja-Tallinn by the harbour, with the trendy Telliskivi Creative City, is well connected and cheaper, and the arty Kalamaja draws lower prices. On the edges spread Lasnamäe and Nõmme, the cheapest and quieter. Most districts sit below the city price average, and the reliable trams and buses reach the Old Town in a quarter of an hour, so a base further from the centre is still convenient.

• First time in Tallinn. The City-Centre and the Old Town are the easiest base. From here it is a walk to Town Hall Square, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral on Toompea hill and the Viru shopping street.
• For families. Family rooms and apartments in the Old Town and the centre, near the sights and the stops. The compact city is easy to cover on foot without driving.
• For couples. Boutique hotels in the heart of the Old Town, with an evening walk along the cobbled streets. Note that some townhouses sit on busy lanes, so for quiet ask for a courtyard-facing room.
• Business travel. Conference and spa hotels by the centre and the harbour are close to the offices and have parking. Most districts are a ride away without a change.
• With breakfast. Many hotels in the centre include a buffet in the rate, which helps you set off early for sightseeing or a morning ferry or flight.
